In a simple term, casting refers to a process that melting metal to liquid state and pouring into model, then getting required shape and performance by cooling and solidification. Casting is quite a common way in manufacturing grinding media for its low cost and flexible craft. It has been popular in China for decades.

Currently, with the higher requirements for casting quality, precision, cost and automation, casting grinding media technology is gradually developing in the direction of precision, large-size, high quality, automation and cleaning. Typically, China made a rapid development in casting technology, like automation, molding simulation and continuous casting.


Casting can be divided into the following types:
Sand casting: this craft refers to using sand as mold material. Depending on different components, this craft can be subdivided into Green Sand Mold and Dry Sand Mold. Here we need to notice that not all sand can be used for molding. Such kind of method is low costing and the sand can be reused for many times but it’s time-consuming of manufacturing and the mold itself can’t be reused since the finished product can only be obtained by destroying the mold.

Metal casting: the melting point of mold material must be higher than that of products. It can also be subdivided into Permanent Mold Casting and Die Casting. Subjected to melting point, the metals used for casting are very limited.

Investment Casting or Lost-wax casting: this craft generally includes External Mold and Solid Mold. The first step is to copy demanded objects by wax, and then immerse it to a pool containing ceramics to make the wax replica be covered with a layer of ceramics, then dry it. Repeating this process until the external mold can afford the casting process (about 1/4“ - 1/8”) . The next step is to extract the model by melting the inside wax. Thereafter, the mold need to be high-temperature treatment to enhance hardness.
The mold can be made accurately by this method and can be used for those metal with high melting point (e.g. titanium). But ceramics is quite expensive and process is complex, its cost is very high.
