High quality grinding steel balls usually have the performance of accurate size, high hardness, high roundness, good wear resisting property and low breakage. By and large, surface hardness is up to 67HRC and volume hardness 64HRC.

Currently, the manufacture technology of grinding steel ball includes casting, forging and hot rolling. For common ball mills, the grinding media diameter is Φ20mm--Φ125mm, while for extra-large ball mills, Φ130mm--Φ150mm is better. To choose suitable ball mill grinding media, we need to have a clear understanding of each type steel ball.

1.  casting grinding ball
Strengths: the sample manufacture equipment needs less investment. Operation is sample. For small orders or order with various items, this production method is more flexible.

Weakness: casting grinding steel balls may have many defects, air holes, sand holes, impurities, cracks, low density, poor impact toughness (3~7J/cm2) and high energy consumption. Moreover, grinding balls with diameter smaller than Φ40mm is difficult to produce by casting.

2.  forged grinding ball
Strengths: Less investment, flexible raw materials, both steel rod and steel billet are suitable, easier to produce.

Weakness: Unit weight can’t be guaranteed with manual feeding, surface folding, heating defects, overheating, over-burning, etc. Moreover, for the big temperature difference in final forging stage and difficult control in heat treatment process, the hardness, hardenability and impact toughness are instable. Therefore, the forging process has low efficiency and high cost.

3. Hot rolling grinding ball
Strengths: manufacture equipment has a high degree of automation, so the product efficiency as well as output are high and the hot rolling grinding ball has stable quality, high hardness and impact toughness, little difference between interior and exterior.

Weakness: heavy investment, high requirements for technology, not suitable for small orders or an order with many different items.

In recent years, with the improvement of raw material and production equipment, hot rolling grinding ball shows its absolute advantages in wet grinding for the high quality and low abrasion. While in dry grinding, casting grinding ball is still in the irreplaceable position. In brief, grinding steel balls should be chosen by specific work conditions and ball mill types.
